On the Word

The Lord created you and has a purpose for you, and has given you five senses – hear, smell, see, taste, and touch.  Everything we know and experience in life comes through one of those five senses. We encounter life that way, and God wants us to learn to encounter the Bible with all of your senses.
We find these experiences in James 1:19-25, My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,  because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
Use everything that God has given you to experience His Word in a very real way.

Change of Focus


Today let’s meditate on Psalm 27:4-14. It is a song of a man wanting to be in the right relationship with God.

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord. Hear my voice when I call, Lord; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, Lord, I will seek. Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior. 10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.

11 Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. 13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.



Changing your focus to follow God might mean waiting and turning another direction in order to be led.

Right Direction


David was “a man after God’s heart”, but he also sinned. He knew that separated him from God, so he wanted to turn back to God and stay in the right relationship. Psalm 25:4-11shows us the right heart and direction.

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good. Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. 10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant. 11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

How does this passage resemble your heart and life direction?

May our prayer be the same as David’s, “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.” Amen?

Praying for Change

In Psalm 85:6-7 we see God’s people praying for revival.   - Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?  Show us your unfailing love, LORD, and grant us your salvation. Let’s look today at some questions concerning this movement of God.
What is Revival? Not evangelism even though many may be saved as a result of it. It is not emotionalism although there may be emotional manifestations connected to it.  It is a renewal of spiritual life in an individual or among a group of people.
When is Revival Needed?  Whenever the love of God's people has grown cold revival is needed.
What Kind of Revival Do We Need? We need a revival that will resurrect the church, rekindle our passion for God, and restore joy and victory to the child of God.
How Can We Have Revival? Only God can send revival. We must face up to spiritual realities, and commit to do things God’s way and not our own.. We must desire and pray to be revived.
Pray for revival.

The Message

In the Gospel of John, we are introduced to the man who was the faithful forerunner of Messiah.  There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.  He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.) John 1:6-9 John the Baptist serves as a witness to Christ (also found in Malachi 3:1 and Mark 1-2)

Remember what Jesus proclaims in John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John the Baptist’s position in the Christmas story is important, because it was prophesied (the Bible is true) and his message was needed. God had been silent for 400 years to Israel. Good News was coming!

Maybe you are feeling God's silence. Seek His voice from His Word. There is something He has to say to you today.

See Grace

Grace is Found in Jesus alone. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—  not by works, so that no one can boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9

1)    This Grace is a gift from God.

2)    Not of works, it cannot be earned or achieved.

Worth cannot be gained by the world we live in, but by the image we are created in.  This is where our worth comes from.

His Image is seen in us! Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” - Genesis 1:26

God cannot deny himself. It’s not anything you have done, it’s not who you are. It’s not because you have great hair, a great last name, or money in the bank. It has nothing to do with your abilities, talents or gifts. He is not moved by any of it.  What He is moved by is His image. He will not let His image be lost. 

Look in a mirror - what do you see? What does God see?

Caring God

God doesn’t care what you’ve done, who you are, or where you’re at. He will do the unthinkable and the ridiculous to get to you and reveal to you His extraordinary love. He will leave the greater sum value to find one, because each is a bearer of his image and of infinite value. … Even the 12 disciples were stuck on worth being something that was earned and achieved.

His Arms - Read Mark 10:13-16 The last verse, “Jesus took the children in his arms, placed his hand on them and blessed them.” He took all of the children in his arms.  It didn’t matter how many there were.

He wants to take everybody in His arms but some of us are too busy trying to wiggle out to give our speeches, pay Him back, earn His love.  Just like the Prodigal in his father’s arms, he was trying to get away and explain himself, but his father ignored him. His father continued to hold him and love him and celebrate.

God is saying, “Would you stop trying to fix yourself, and improve yourself, and better yourself, and let Me hold you? Just come let Me hold you, restore you, heal you, forgive you, love you, celebrate you.” - Grace

Grace starts in His arms, ends in His arms, and is all about being in His arms. Jesus is grace. (It’s worth discovering)

Real Wisdom

Spend some time today meditating on 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 18 - For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." 20Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: "Let the one who boasts boast in the LORD."


What does this passage teach us about the wisdom of the world?

Why did God choose to proclaim a gospel message that the world would see as foolish and weak?

How do these truths influence the way that we relate to people who deny that God exists?

Mind Set

I use the word focus a lot in my teaching and counseling. The truth is that I use that word as much for my own benefit as those I am sharing it with.  In Hebrews 1:2 it says, We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. To keep our minds on the things of God and to be obedient we must focus! This is essential in order to live a Christ-like life. The Bible directs us in this, Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. - Colossians 3:2-3

Four things that help me focus:

1. Prayer – Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. - Psalm 127:1

2. Use of Multiple Reinforcements – So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

3. Adjust Behavior – Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. - James 1:22

4. Change Thinking – Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. -Ephesians 5:1-2

Use your prayers, thoughts, faith, and mind to help you stay focused. God deserves nothing less than our best. Amen?

Real Wisdom


The world is full of opinions and experts, but who is really wise? Real wisdom can only come from the Lord. When we accept this things become much clearer.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. - Romans 1:18–23

Don’t forget to use verses 19-20 in your witnessing and sharing the truth. God has made His reality known to all, and we have two choices: acceptance or rejection. It really comes down to that.

Still Changing


Yesterday we looked at God never changes, but believers are to be changed and transformed. Here are two more thoughts (and Scripture) about God’s promises and change:



1. Believers need to change their thinking.

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. - Philippians 4:6-8



2. Believers must change their focus to the eternal.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

What areas of change do you need to work on?

Use God’s Word to direct and clarify the transformation and imitation He desires. Amen?

Promised Change

Change in in a believer’s life is expected. See what Paul has to say on the subject in his letter to the church in Ephesus. Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. - Ephesians 5:1-2 (ESV)

Two Things to Know about Change:

1. God never changes.
"For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." - Malachi 3:6

2. Believers are to change and be transformed. 
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. - Romans 12:1-2

We Change

It is true that God never changes, but God is also a God of new ideas, of innovation. God is a God who uses change. We must pray for new visions. We cannot be content with what is. We must crave what can be. That which holds our attention will determine our actions!

If you want to be distressed - look within. If you want to be defeated - look back.
If you want to be distracted - look around. If you want to be dismayed - look ahead.
If you want to be delivered - look up! When we focus our attention upon the Lord:

Setbacks will become springboards! Obstacles will turn into opportunities! Barriers will turn into blessings! Cowards will become courageous!

We can learn from Moses. Hebrews 11:27 tells us: " By faith he left Egypt not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen." Those last words are words which should instruct us. Moses’ eyes were on God and he was able to endure. The Living Bible says: he " kept right on going!" Moffatt’s translation says, " He never flinched."

Moses had staying power - even with all the changes that challenged him. That power is available to all of us.

Moses kept his eyes on God, not the obstacles. He endured in his eighties, in his nineties, and on into his hundreds. He endured despite the contempt of Pharaoh, the stubbornness of the Hebrews who grumbled, maligned him, complained, and rebelled. He endured amidst the criticism of those closest to him. He fixed his eyes on the Lord, and never looked back.

You and I can do the same! We can endure by fixing our eyes on our Lord, and allowing His changes to happen in our lives. Amen?

Eyes Up


God is calling His church to have a renewed vision. We must have a passionate and clear vision of what God has called us to do and of what we need to be. Too often we have taken our feet off the pedal and looked too long in the rearview mirror at past glories.

Someone has said: “When we have more memories than dreams, life is over." When we have greater memories than dreams we will never make a difference in changing our world for God. We must know where we are going and what we are going to do!  We must dream great dreams! The challenge before us is to aim high. Low aim is a crime - it’s a sin!

God told Isaiah in Isaiah 43:18-19: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” You and I can do the same! We can endure by fixing our eyes on our Lord.

God calls us to be courageous:

Even when the evil seem to prosper

Even when the wicked seem to be winning

Even when the pressure seems to be unbearable

Even when the critics won’t shut up

Even when big people act contemptibly small.

Even when we feel as though we’re all alone

Even when a lie is called truth, and the truth is called a lie.

As you stand on the edge of a new change, a new challenge, a new commitment -- look at Christ! Whatever it is you are facing - look at Christ! With our eyes on Christ we can go forward fearlessly, and know that the things which are shaken will only reveal the Eternal and Unmovable God! Bring on the changes -- world do your worst!

God uses ordinary people totally committed to Him to make a difference in a changing world. One person can make a difference!

Insights to Sharing

We see in Luke 19:1-10 the story of Jesus meeting Zacchaeus. It says that the “church people” murmured or muttered. What was the problem? Jesus was talking to, and then going to this sinner’s house!

This highlights three things about sharing the Gospel message:

1. God is a seeking God.

2. God calls us by name.

3. Jesus identifies with us as individuals.

We, the church, need to be more like Jesus. If someone was lost in the woods or drowning wouldn’t we try to save them? Do we approach sharing the gospel with the same determination and passion?

Are we applying the lessons that Jesus taught us: going out in the community, taking time and interest in others? Many churches believe if they keep things nice, do things the way we’ve always done it, and open the doors then people will come. Now this is not a judgment on what was, but realization that time has change. We have new opportunities to apply timeless Christ principles – if we are willing. Amen?

Focused Wisdom


Do you see life’s meaning through God’s eyes and wisdom? Have you lost your focus?



In Ecclesiastes 12 some of Solomon’s last recorded words were: (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) 13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. Praise the Lord! I think he finally got it. It’s not about us – it should always be all about God.



Another wonderful source of wisdom (Fearing God and keeping his commandments,) is found in Matthew 5:1-20. Also known as the Sermon on the Mount and The Beatitudes. Listen to the instruction that Jesus gives to us here.



    1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.  He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted

5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.



Who are blessed here according to Jesus?



What outcomes are promised?

Bring It

In 2 Chronicles 1:6 Solomon sought the Lord at the Tent of the Meeting, offering 1,000 sacrifices, in order to please and hear from the God.

What would be your 1,000 offerings?

The answer to this question can be found in Hebrews 13:15-16Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

It’s not a finite number, but it’s a continual offering and sacrifice of praise through four ways that pleases God.

1. Honoring Him with what comes out of our mouths. Everything we say should bring God glory.
2. Openly professing the Name of Jesus as Savior. This is the “applying the Word to my life” part. You witness and share Jesus with your lifestyle.
3. Doing good – being godly. We are called to be righteous, holy and just in all our dealings with the world.
4. Sharing with others – loving your neighbors. Jesus said it best that we are to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. This is where “being Jesus with skin on” can come in to play.

Year of 180

This is Hopewell Baptist Church's 180th anniversary year! We will be celebrating that milestone all year long. I have also proclaimed this as the year of 180. When we do a 180 degree turn it changes our direction to the exact other way. There are things in all our lives that deserves this change – for the good and away from the bad. This should be a discipline in our own lives and churches.

In God's family just like our human family there are always expectations. Jesus has given different talents to different people, & He expects those talents to be used (even if it means doing a 180). Matthew 25:21 says, “His lord said to him, ’Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’” Jesus wants us to grow. 2 Peter 3:18 instructs, “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen”.

God wants us to realize our potential. He expects us to do our best. Colossians 1:28 teaches, “Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.”

Imitate God

One of my favorite Bible passages is from Ephesians 5:1-2. Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (ESV)

This is BIG - Be Imitators of God!

So what does this look like in a Christ follower's life?

We must look at the character of God, who is; Good, Holy, Just, Perfect, Love, Righteous, Pure, Caring, Forgiving, and Hope. 

Is this how people would describe you?

Start with Ephesians 5 - know and imitate  Father God, walk in love, live and give as Christ did. People will start to see Jesus instead of you. Make that your goal. Amen?

First Things


Is God first in our lives? There is a saying, “First things first.” So, the first thing has to be God. Genesis begins this way. It says, “In the beginning God . . .” The Bible begins with God. It begins with the account of God creating the heavens and the earth and everything in between: including us. So, if we ever find ourselves wondering, where does life begin, Genesis orients us. If we are ever wondering what comes first, Genesis tells us. If we ever find ourselves wondering, where do I begin or where do I start in my own life, Genesis gives us a starting place: it teaches us that life begins with God. God was in the beginning – and, in fact, God was prior to the beginning of creation. God has been on the scene long before we arrived and will be around long after we’re gone. God has always been and always will be. He is eternal. Life begins and ends with God. He comes first, not us.

I think that sometimes we need to be reminded of the most basic aspects of our faith. Why? Because even as Christians we don’t always act or live like God comes first, do we?

In The Message Eugene Peterson introduces the book of Genesis by saying: “First, God. God is the subject of life. God is foundational for living. If we don’t have a sense of the primacy of God, we will never get it right, get life right, get our lives right. Not God at the margins; not God as an option; not God on the weekends. God at the center and the circumference; God first and last; God, God, God.” He is trying to hammer home a point that we often find it hard actually to live out: “First, God.”, and that God still creates all our days…including today. Make the most of it. Amen?

Gifting God


We recently went through a season of gift giving. Much of our time and efforts were focused on getting and getting presents. Did you ever think about what kind of gift you can give God? After all it is Jesus’ birthday – God gave His Son, Mary gave birth, and Jesus gives us the way to redemption. What was our offering?



The good news is we can (and should) be giving to Him all year long! We need to be willing to give God the gift of our:

Repentance – Romans 10:8-13

Faith – Psalm 34:4-6 and James 2:18

Mind – 1 Peter 2:1-3

Heart – 1 John 3:17-20

Witness – Matthew 28:18-20



Let this coming New Year be the year that you grow further in your knowledge of Christ and the impact of your faith because you have been transformed by the power of God. The result will be a life that is a gift, a life that is holy, a life that is pleasing to Him and a blessing to others! Amen?

Heart's Throne


Solomon was the wisest man in the world of his time. The Bible says that aside from Jesus, he was the wisest man in the world ever. 

Since he is known for his remarkable wisdom, the questions beg to be asked: Where did all this great wisdom come from, and how did he receive it?



 Let’s start by looking at 1 Kings 2:1-4 and David’s Charge  to Solomon: 1 When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son. 2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strongact like a man3 and observe what the LORD your God requiresWalk in obedience to him, and keephis decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go 4 and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

 The Father, David, gave this wisdom to his son, Solomon. There are three things he is told: 1. Be Strong 2. Act like a man 3. Observe God’s commands. The first two have to do more with the physical, but the last one touches on something much more critical – the Spiritual. The crucial aspects of a wise and Godly person are to keep your walk and talk the same, and be focused on Christ. 



Your heart, mind, and soul must remain faithful to God. If David’s family kept the Lord on their “heart’s throne” then they would remain as the head of a thriving nation. What great advice and a promise to give to your child! Be what God wants you to be and He will do great things in your life, your children, and your children’s children lives. Keep Him on your “heart’s throne”. Amen?

Clear Future


The church needs to know where they’re going and where the leaders are trying to take them, or they will have a hard time making the journey. 



That’s why God tells us:

Proverbs 29:18 (KJV) Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Proverbs 29:18 (NIV) Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint.”



A clear vision communicates three things:

1. Why we’re here: our purpose. A clear purpose provides direction. To GATHER as God's people. To GROW in faith, love and service And to GO into the world as disciples.



2. Where we’re going: a picture of the future. A clear picture provides motivation. Be the Church Inreach/Outreach/Community/other churches
